George W. Sharpley papers, 1897-1898, 1909.

The collection consists of photographs and miscellaneous papers relating to the Spanish-American war service of George W. Sharpley. The papers include general orders, a typed memorandum dated 27 June 1898, and a copy of a poem "The Men of the Maine," about the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine on 15 February 1898. There are also two documents dating from 1909 pertaining to Sharpley's status as a Spanish-American war veteran and member of the Sixth National Encampment, United Spanish War Veterans. The collection also includes three photographs: one of George Sharpley, taken by a studio in Burlington, Vermont; one of a group of soldiers, dated March 4, 1897; and one of four unidentified men, who appear to be both military and civilians. The documents and photographs were originally stored in a writing case with unused stationary from Camp George H. Thomas, Chickamauga Park, Postal Station, Chattanooga, Tennessee.

George W. Sharpley, the son of John T. Sharpley, was born in Essex Junction, Vermont around 1872. He served in the Spanish-American War and was later employed as a rural mail carrier in Vermont.
